Bodenlos is the title of Flusser’s biography. It is a word with a rich range of interpretations

• Boden = ground, earth, floor
• los = without, but also to be free from

In Flusser’s context it can be interpreted as the experience of having the ground fall away, of being thrown into exile, where the ground is uncertain, unknown, or maybe not even there under one’s feet. However, the ground is not there may mean that one is falling or that one is floating or even rising, flying or jumping. Being freed from the ground may be a momentary or a permanent state, and it is implied, in Flusser’s texts on Nomadism, that whatever ground Western Civilization might have imagined it was built on, has disintegrated in Auschwitz and the true abjection of human existence has been revealed again. We are all bodenlos and must learn to make the most of it.
