fiction

Fiction plays a very important role in Flusser's thinking. In many conferences and essays he uses fiction and myth instead of real examples. The philosopher himself wrote many philosophical tales, which were published mainly in Ficções filosóficas and Angenommen. His tales are usually satirical and ironic, and emulate several writing genres, which is why they can be seen as Menippean satires. In them, the Homo ludens Flusser shows himself the most. We can also think of them as philosophical fables.

Fiction is a principle of Flusser's writing. But also a method for science. Flusser wrote about the possibility of a truly “science fiction”, in the sense of scientifically precise fiction, that could enrich science with another method for reaching truth. According to him, this kind of fiction should seek the improbable, yet possible. Flusser's thinking about fiction seems to have suffered great influence of Hans Vaihinger's Philosophy of “as if”.

In “Da ficção” Flusser writes about a profound change in our sense of reality, which is the reason why today we can only see reality as another fiction. “Fiction is reality.”
