Models of communication

Following his view of culture and society, Flusser outlines an alternative scenario to the industrial revolution, namely the informational revolution. Compared to the structure of a schematic, Flusser proposes two “basic structures”.

Sender-receiver structure [30]

This structure embodies a “discursive, totalitarian, fascist culture” on the basis that a sender delivers information to multiple, differently oriented receivers. Thus, the channels here are not interconnected, which does not allow for fluid exchanges between senders and receivers. It should be noted that fascist is to be understood etymologically. From the derivation from the Latin “fasces” (corr. “fascis”) that he translates in his speech as bundles, he understands fascist schematics as bundles of channels around the transmitter.

Examples: Newspapers, radio → usual mass communication media; also Flusser's own publications.

In short: Here there is a clear separation of (author), sender and receiver (The author can also be sender). There are power relations between sender and receiver.

Dialogic structure [31]

In this basic structure, there is an interweaving of channels so that information can flow freely between sender and receiver. This creates a “dialogic […] cultural situation”.

Examples: mail, telephony

In short: No separation (author), sender, receiver Everyone can take any role

Human communication V. Flusser:

The process in which information is processed, conserved, and passed on and new information is generated encloses for Flusser the vital human communication. In one of his later publications Flusser deals with “communicology” which includes forms and codes of this information transfer. (cf. Flusser 1998)
