Menschwerdung [Becoming Human] is Flusser's last major book project, which remained fragmentary and on which he worked until his death.

1994 fragmentarily published in Vom Subjekt zum Projekt. Menschwerdung, edited by Stefan Bollmann and Edith Flusser in collaboration with Klaus Sander, pages 163-241. In addition to the “Vorderhand” part printed in Vom Subjekt zum Projekt, two other parts were planned that were not realised, (“Augenblick” and “Spurlos”).¹⁾

A translation of the German edition of Vom Subjekt zum Projekt into Japanese was published by the University of Tokyo Press in 1996.²⁾ In 1998, Fischer Taschenbuch Verlag published an unabridged paperback licensed edition of Vom Subjekt zum Projekt.³⁾ In 2002, translated into English as Humanizations, in Writings, edited by Andreas Ströhl and published by the University of Minnesota Press, pp. 181-191.⁴⁾

“Die Kunst der Selbstüberwindung erweist sich als jene Kunst, dank derer sich das Selbst immer etwas anderes vormacht, bis es zum Schluß keinen Sinn mehr hat, von einem Selbst zu sprechen. […] Anders gesagt, Menschsein ist, das niederträchtige Selbst überwunden zu haben. […] Selbstvergessenheit“ […] nichts besonders Erhabenes an solchen Augenblicken. Jeder erlebt sie, wann immer er sich verliert, um in etwas anderes hineinzufallen: in ein spannendes Buch, in einen Film, in eine Musik, ins Herstellen von etwas, in einen anderen Menschen. Es geht um ein Verschwimmen des Subjekts im Objekt, wobei es keinen Sinn mehr hat, von Subjekt und Objekt zu sprechen. […] Sie ist jener Augenblick, in welchem wir nicht mehr Subjekt sind. Durch diesen Verlust des Subjekts „in uns“, durch dieses Hinausgehen aus uns „selbst“ zum anderen hin wird die Niedertracht überwunden, und eben dies kann „Menschwerdung“ heißen.” 258-259

The art of overcoming the self turns out to be the art thanks to which the self always pretends to be something else, until in the end it no longer makes sense to speak of a self. […] In other words, to be human is to have overcome the base self. […] “Self-forgetfulness” […] nothing particularly sublime about such moments. Everyone experiences them whenever they lose themselves in order to fall into something else: into an exciting book, into a film, into music, into making something, into another person. It is about a blurring of the subject in the object, whereby it no longer makes sense to speak of subject and object. […] It is that moment It is that moment in which we are no longer subject. Through this loss of the subject “in us”, through this going out of ourselves “into ourselves” towards the other, baseness is overcome, and precisely this can be “becoming human”. this can be called 'becoming human'.“
