Algorithm

Algorithms are mathematical functions often used to transform or reconfigure data. When text appears on a computer screen in a human-legible form, it must first be rendered legible through algorithms from the electronic numerical data form in which it is stored. In this sense, technical images, including electronically published texts, are always algorithmically generated from mathematical codes. Although the technical images they produce may seem like the iconic, mystical, and mythical images of preliterate times, the algorithmic code apparatuses, which generate these technical images, are products of causal linear thinking of the literate Enlightenment. For Vilém Flusser algorithms work in the causal logic of literacy as they produce communication forms appropriate to the information revolution.
