Das zwanzigste Jahrhundert [The Twentieth Century] is Vilém Flusser's first book manuscript, finished in 1957 after several years of editing.¹⁾

Unpublished as a book until today, the German typescript is available in the Vilém Flusser Archive under the index document number 1423²⁾.

“Wenn wir nicht hoffen können, aus der Betrachtung unserer Quellen Schlüsse auf unsere Zukunft zu ziehen, so können wir wenigstens hoffen, über sie nicht völlig wertlose Aufschlüsse zu erzielen. Darum hat es zu jeder Zeit Menschen gegeben, welche eine Synthese ihrer Situation versuchten, mit dem eingestandenen oder uneingestandenen Zwecke, sich über den nächsten Schritt zu belehren.” p. 8

That is why there have been people at all times who have attempted a synthesis of their situation, with the admitted or unadmitted purpose of instructing themselves about the next step.]
