On April 7, 1990 Vilém Flusser accepted an invitation to Budapest for a symposium entitled “The Media Are With Us!: The Role of Television in the Romanian Revolution”, which was organised in response to the events of the previous December. The speakers included Vilém Flusser, Peter Weibel, Margaret Morse, Ingo Günther and Geert Lovink amongst others.

“Bilder verstellen was sie vorstellen, sie stellen sich vor das was sie vorstellen sollen. […] Images are meant for people to orient themselves in the world, but when they become very strong, people use their experience in the world to orient themselves in the image. The image becomes the concrete reality and the world is only a pretext.”

“What is now happening in Romania cannot be history, something else. Political reasoning does not apply to it. It is the result of magic. It’s a sort of technical voodoo.”
